Sweden Is Finally Copying Denmark's Strict Immigration Model
For decades, Sweden and Denmark represented two very different approaches to immigration. Sweden embraced multiculturalism, humanitarian openness, and some of Europe’s most generous asylum policies. Denmark took a different path, tightening immigration rules, demanding stronger integration, and arguing that protecting the welfare state required protecting social cohesion. For years, Sweden criticized the Danish approach. Then everything began to change. The 2015 migration crisis, growing segregation, gang violence, parallel societies, and a dramatic shift in public opinion transformed Sweden’s immigration debate. Policies that once seemed politically impossible gradually became mainstream. Today, Sweden is tightening asylum rules, expanding deportations, demanding greater integration, and even offering immigrants financial incentives to voluntarily return to their countries of origin. In this video, we trace how Sweden went from being one of Europe’s most open societies to adopting many of the same ideas it once condemned in neighboring Denmark. And we explore the deeper question behind this Scandinavian experiment: can a generous welfare state survive without strong borders, social trust, and shared values?
