The Invasion of Ukraine - History Between Ukraine & Russia (1991- 2022)
In this fourth and final part of the series, we cover the leading events before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Russian President Boris Yeltsin’s attempted to use the Commonwealth of Independent States as a modern Soviet organization, where Ukraine would retain joint sovereignty with Russia. In January 1993, Ukraine refused to sign the Statute of the Commonwealth, meaning that it would not become a full member of the Commonwealth of Independent States. The first major conflict between Ukraine and Russia occurred in May 1992 when the Admiral of the Soviet Black fleet refused to take the oath of allegiance to Ukraine. In 1997, the two countries signed a friendship treaty that guaranteed Ukrainian territorial integrity.
